ARCHIE'S BACK

Its that time again, The Archibald Prize is back in Dubbo.

Each year in accordance with the bequest of Jules F. Archibald (1856-1919) the Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales invite artists to submit paintings in competition for an annual prize which is awarded to the best portrait of a man or woman ‘distinguished in Art, Letters, Science or Politics’. All works are judged by the Trustees of the Gallery with the winner receiving a prize of $50,000.

The annual exhibition has grown over its 88 years to become the most popular, sought after and controversial art prize in Australia. A cross section of contemporary artistic practice in Australia, the Archibald Prize, creates debate every year, from the nature of portraiture and painting to who we have come to see as 'distinguished'.

We would love to know what works you loved, or what works you hated, but before that be sure to come and view all 39 works.

The exhibition is on display at the Western Plains Cultural Centre until September 13Entry: $8 / $5 Friends / concession) 10am to 4pm Wed - Mon
